First legit spill of my return to skateboarding—broken glasses, blood, and all. I thought it was a good idea to go for a board slide on a low ledge before I was ready. Smart.
Usually, I’m a thinker, so I go over a possible trick for any number of sessions before making the first attempts. Today, for whatever reason, it seemed worthwhile to “just go for it.”

The idea for the board slide was evident from my first visits to the skatepark about nine months ago, but it was it was also clear then, though not so much today, that various foundations would need to be laid before the trial and error of learning the trick could begin.
In my rush, the board slid out underneath me and left me to slam my hip on the ledge and introduce my face to the concrete. Smooth, bro. Smooth.
Still, I feel this is a lesson in skateboarding that will resonate elsewhere. At least, that’s what I’m telling my self every time I apply ice.
